Opportunities to Pursue Education in the United States

U.S. institutions of higher education and other certified programs attract thousands of students from outside the United States. These students are interested in studying in the United States to further their education and improve their future career prospects. At Gardiner Immigration P.A., our Tampa immigration attorney helps students secure individual visas to attend universities or certified educational programs in this country.

Types of Individual Visas

A few different types of visas are available for foreign nationals interested in visiting the United States for educational and training purposes. The right type of visa for an individual depends on the type of training or program. At Gardiner Immigration, we can help you determine the best option for your needs.

The most common types of visas for studying in the U.S. include:

  • F Visas – This non-immigrant student visa allows foreign students to pursue academic studies or language training programs. Students with F-1 visas must maintain a full course of study and demonstrate that they can support themselves during their time in the U.S. F-2 visas are given to dependents of a student with an F-1 visa, such as a spouse and children.

  • M Visas – This type of visa is for foreign students seeking to pursue programs at vocational and technical schools. The student is admitted into the U.S. for a specific time period, which includes the training program, optional practical training, and a 30 day grace period. This type of visa typically limits the stay to one year. Students with M-1 status are not permitted to work.

  • J Visas – This non-immigrant visa allows international candidates to come to the United States to study, teach receive job training, or conduct research. There are several programs that qualify for a J-1 visa, such as exchange programs for secondary school students, au pairs, camp counselors, internships, summer work travel, professors and teachers, and other international visitors. The time period for this type of visa can range from a few weeks to a few years.

When applying for a student visa, it is important to consider the type of educational program, typical program length, and other factors to ensure that you apply for the right type of visa. Call Gardiner Immigration P.A. for help.
